Like the darkly romantic D. H. Lawrence poem from which it draws its name, the Mosquito was designed to challenge the definition of aesthetic beauty. Owned by a pastry chef who dreamed of opening a wholly unique champagne and dessert bar to showcase her design-forward creations, the challenge was to make a success of a very niche venture in the Gastown neighbourhood–the locus of Vancouver’s after-work drinking and dining scene–that would look like nothing else in town. Inventing a distinct visual language for the small restaurant was imperative.
